Virtual Tuesday Talk: All That They Made: Identity, Material Culture, and the Black Presence in South Carolina Decorative Arts

Free virtual lecture at DAR Museum

May 13, 2025. 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.

This presentation explores the intersection of identity, material culture, and the Black experience through the lens of South Carolina's decorative arts. By examining objects crafted by Black artisans and influenced by their cultural heritage, this discussion highlights how these artifacts reveal the complex relationships between craftsmanship, racial identity, and social status. Through an analysis of Black craftspeople, this presentation sheds light on how they contributed to creating, shaping and preserving South Carolina decorative arts traditions while navigating a landscape that was hostile to their artistry and their presence.

Speaker: Dr. Tiffany Momon, Black Craftspeople Digital Archive

This event is taking place online only. The speaker will not be present at the DAR Museum.
